Wondering how it all began?
Nikki’s daughter, Raven, was diagnosed in 2003 with Juvenile Diabetes. Raven’s parents, F. J. and Nikki, were searching for a new way to raise money and awareness for her illness. Nikki’s Kettle Corn was established in January 2007 out of a passion to be part of finding a cure for Type I, Juvenile Diabetes.
It’s blatantly obvious that without money, there will be no research. Without research, there will be no cure. Raven’s family decided to sell a product full of sugar. Yep! Full of sugar! F. J. and Nikki realized they had never seen people standing in line to buy apples and oranges. They also new without a doubt the question would be raised ‘Why are you selling something full of sugar for diabetes?’ Well…Thanks for asking! What a perfect opportunity to explain that juvenile diabetes isn’t solely about sugar. It’s about the pancreas not being able to produce insulin to maintain blood sugars throughout the day. Raven’s own cells are essentially killing her pancreas. To find out more interesting and helpful information, visit www.jdrf.org and www.diabetes.com.
Nikki, F. J., and Raven attend various festivals and events featuring Nikki’s Kettle Corn. While F. J. handles the grunt work, Raven and her mom work the public. You should see them in action! Raven even has her friends involved. They spend a lot of time with her and can tell you firsthand the changes she exhibits when she is having difficulty with her illness.
In a bold effort to raise awareness and money to benefit children with diabetes and their families, Raven and her parents have founded a non-profit organization, The Raven Parish Caminita Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. The foundation hopes to be able to provide scholarships, defray medical costs associated with this disease, and bring to the forefront the desperate need for a cure.
Awareness, education, and more awareness and education! That’s the goal of Nikki’s Kettle Corn and The Raven Parish Caminita Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Thank you for being part of the cure for Raven and thousands like her.
